Sewing for Boys

Chewbacca Tee

Now that the spring challenge has wrapped up, I’m making more of an effort to sew for the kids again. In doing so, I want to try to sew for the boys a bit more. They’re always lacking in that department, and since I didn’t complete a project for this guy. I figured I should make him a quick one to please him.

As he’s getting older, it’s become harder and harder for me to think of ways to please him in the clothing department. It’s no secret that he’s into the more athletic looks and it’s all about comfort. Tees are always a good to, and they’re typically those graphic tees that you can get at Old Navy or what not. About two months ago, I received a Cricut Maker, ordered some iron on vinyl and then waited until I figured out what I wanted to make…. And then Cricut sent out a newsletter last Monday with their new Star Wars cartridge.

Outside of anything sport related, Star Wars is always a win win. So in the hopes of making him a tee that he would wear, I let him pick the character that he wanted and used my cricut machine to cut it out onto the iron on vinyl. Since I didn’t have much for solids other then this black jersey and really wanted to sew from my stash, I thought a high contrast would be nice and printed the iron on vinyl on white.

I used Titchy Thread’s Rowan Tee in a size 7 to make the tee. I added about 1″ to the length, since his measurement are pretty close to L’s other then the height. Once I had it sewn, I measured the front of the tee and placed the vinyl centered width wise and about a 1/3 of the way down from the top length wise. So far, this tee is a win, and I’m highly debating sewing up a bunch more from that Star Wars cartridge! Especially since he’s so excited about the new Solo movie coming out and is hoping for one of those rare movie dates.

I used to find sewing for this boy especially intimidating, but the more I’ve grown to understand my sewing and the more I’ve grown to understand his own style, the more I know what sorts of things he’ll wear the most. It’s taken me a lot longer to understand him compared to the others, but now that we’re getting there, it’s definitely been worth all the mistakes.
