SLEEVE DRIVING & a giveaway

Hi Everyone, it’s Anne again from Sofilantjes. I was asked to sew something up to inspire you. Hopefully I can.

Flashback Sinny Tee- Toys theme.

The last post I wrote was more about girls than boys, so I though this time I will make it all about the boy, my big Hero. For my inspiration post I was allowed to choose a pattern from Made by Rae.  If you did not check out her pattern shop, it is a must. She has some beautiful patterns. Plus a great blog to follow. I choose the Flashback Skinny Tee for my skinny almost 6 yo and she was so lovely to send me the Parsley Pants too, in case I wanted to sew it later on. So sweet!

Flashback skinny tee-Toys

I sewed up a size 6 with a little extra length. My son is the perfect size 6 in chest according to the size chart. It fits him beautiful and skinny, just like it should. I gave my son a cars shirt with his own road, traffic light and a car! If only I had a car like that….

The road is made by cutting a strip of black knit fabric and adding yellow stripes with a (paint)fabric marker. I sewed it on top of the sleeve with my coverstitch. The car is an iron-on I once received with a fabric order from Joyfits. The two-tone cuff is a hack of the normal 2″ cuff in the pattern. Looks easy right?! I am sure you can do even better than me.

It’s save to say that he really loves this shirt. He wants to wear it again tomorrow. Thank you Rae for a great pattern and sponsoring this winter edition of Kids Clothes week.

Comment on this post to win the classic Made by Rae pattern combo, the Flashback Tee and Parsley Pants, as well as one yard of knit fabric from Imagine Gnats. Rachael has such a fantastic variety of knits in her shop that you could make a flashback tee out of each one of them and they would all be awesome! Here are a few that caught my eye. They would all look fabulous with a 2-color cuff, a technique I’m now itching to try out!!

1. avantguard: chalk on charcoal in knit 2. cotton/lycra jersey in navy stripes 3. artisan: intertwill patience in knit 4. organic interlock knit: spots in navy

Enter by Tuesday Feb 23. This giveaway is open to international entries, void where prohibited by law. Winner will receive 2 digital patterns from Made by Rae and 1 yard of knit fabric from Imagine Gnats. THIS GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED!

KCW: scavenger hunt!

scavenger hunt: made by rae

Welcome to the last scavenger hunt of giveaway week! Or should that be the last giveaway of scavenger hunt week? Either way there is a fantastic prize to win from a fantastic shop–Made by Rae. Some of my most well-worn patterns are Made by Rae. When you find a pattern that works–for you to sew, for your kids to wear–you go back to it again and again. Made by Rae patterns just work, all the time! They are simple, easily customizable, and fit well. What more do you need?

Keeping with this season’s theme, DISGUISE, I picked 4 of Rae’s patterns and looked around to see what costumes people made with them. And wowwy wow wow! There are so many costumes out there made with Made by Rae patterns! Who knew a tunic could turn you into a swordsman or a simple pants pattern could magically transform you into prince charming? There are lots of disguises hiding in these staple patterns.

1. cowardly lion 2. lion cub 3. strong man 4. skeleton suit 5. scary tiger 6. pippi longstocking 7. spiderman 8. nurse costume

All the disguises pictured above started with the Flashback Skinny Tee pattern. The sewers used fleece, jersey, dad’s old tee shirts; they painted and stenciled; they played with colors and pattern. And look! It’s like a virtual Halloween parade right here on KCW! Give me two patterns, Rae’s flashback tee and Liesl’s cozy winter hat, and I will give you an awesome costume!

1. marty mcfly 2. little cowboy 3. fireman’s pants 4. darth vader 5. minions run wild 6. prince charming

I guess that would be a costume without pants! Luckily Rae’s got us covered in the pants department too. Elastic pants are a staple in my household and even more so when it come to dress up. There is no time to fuss with zippers and snaps when you have to be the Dark Lord RIGHT NOW! So if your kids are lacking in the pants department, whip up a few Parsley Pants and they will be happy little campers –or cowboys or firemen or time travelers, even.

Sometimes you just need to make one thing and be done. The Geranium Dress is the one pattern you need for all your girl’s princess and fairy and Studio Ghibli dreams to come true.

1.and 2. willow costume 3. mini mouse 4. and 5. fantastic mr. fox 6. inigo montoya

Of all the Made by Rae patterns-turned-into-costumes, Inigo Montoya (in the bottom right corner) has to be my very favorite. I crack up every time I see Jessica’s little girl dressed up as the intrepid sword fighter in The Princess Bride. She really looks like she’s about to say, “My name is Inigo Montoya, you killed my father, prepare to die!” Of course the Charlie Tunic works for less sinister characters as well. Just look at that sweet Mini Mouse!

All of these patterns (and more!) can be yours! Play along with our little scavenger hunt and you will be entered to win any 5 patterns you choose from Made by Rae’s shop.

To enter, hunt around the internet for the answers to a few tricky questions. You have until Friday October 23. This giveaway is open to international entries, void where prohibited by law. Winner will receive a 5 Made by Rae patterns of their choice .

giveaway week on KCW!

made by rae + giveaway

If you sew clothes and haven’t heard of Made by Rae, well then you must live on the moon or under a rock (or under a moon rock)! But just in case…

Made By Rae patterns are fun, easy to sew, and infinitely adaptable. They make sewing accessible to everyone who wants to make clothes for women and children, with patterns full of detailed instructions and diagrams, plus hints and tips for skill development.

Rae is a sewer and a pattern maker and a fabric designer and a mother. Her patterns reflect all of these things. She makes kids’ clothes that kids actually want to wear–they aren’t fussy and they are always comfy. When you sew Made by Rae patterns, you can keep the details to a minimum to show off an amazing fabric. Or you can use the pattern as a starting place to make that fantastic idea you have come to life. They are truly the most versatile kids’ patterns out there.

Her newest pattern, Moon Pants, are no exception. From a fabric-lovers perspective they are perfect. You get to pick and choose from a wide variety of fabric types. I would choose double gauze for the spring, fine wale corduroy for the fall, sweatshirt fleece for winter, and though it often isn’t good for clothes I can easily see using simple quilting cotton in the summer.

The pattern does a fantastic job of showing off your favorite print. And there are so many good prints out there right now. This is the perfect excuse to buy a few yards of that one you’ve been eyeing. I am dying to make Moon Pants for my daughter with each and every one of these prints:

For my sons I want to use soft, durable knits like ponte de roma or french terry. And wouldn’t a pair of Moon Pants be extra cozy in a quilted knit?!

Arg! So many options! Maybe Moon Pants are like potato chips, you can’t just make one. That is a very good thing when it comes to sewing patterns–not so much for potato chips.

You can see now that the Moon Pants pattern is a simple and satisfying sew for everyday-wear, but come Halloween you will be singing Rae’s praises up and down. This pattern could be used in so many different ways: When your kid wants to be a swamp monster or pirate king the Moon Pants will be there for you. When you have to sew the three kings costumes for the Christmas play, the Moon Pants will be there for you. And when you get stuck making fuzzy bunny suits for 20 kindergarteners, the Moon Pants will be there for you (and you’ll wish you never told the teacher that you sew).
