SET SAIL TOP & a giveaway

Hi Everyone. It is Jolanda again from the Dutch blog jurkenenshirtjes to inspire you for the toy theme of this seasons KCW. For my inspiration post I could pick a pattern from Oliver+S. The pattern of the sailboat top gave me the inspiration to mix in the theme of toys. Also I definitely wanted to work with fabric paint. The sweater I have made is a sweater that is a toy in itself.

I love the vintage feeling of their patterns! Don’t you? I also had planned to make the sailboat pants, but I didn’t make it on time (I even just finished this project … whew, just in time. I’ll admit: I’m an infamous last-minute seamstress ; ) But I’m sure going to make a pair pants for the summer!

“It’s over here!”

As a child I had my own sail boat and I enjoyed sailing with it. Maybe my son will also enjoy the sailing as much as I did one day. But for now he loves to play with his new sweater ; )

And remember: Do not go sailing when the weather is stormy!

Thanks Oliver + S for the great patterns and sponsoring this winter edition of Kids Clothes week! And to all of you who are going to join KCW next week: Let’s enjoy sewing and let the toys theme bring you back in time, just as it did to me : )

Comment on this post to win a digital pattern from Oliver + S and a yard of fabric from Sew Modern. There are so,so many fantastic prints in the Sew Modern shop. This sailboat top is a perfect pattern to experiment with prints (or add your own touch to solids) and it works equally well in knits or woven. KCW: scavenger hunt!
fall

scavenger hunt: oliver + s

It is the week before KCW, which means it’s giveaway week! We have a fabulous week full of fabulous prizes. But instead of leaving a comment or ticking off boxes in Rafflecpter, we’ve got a little scavenger hunt for you to play each day!

Today’s giveaway is from the beloved pattern company, Oliver + S. They have a new pattern out this fall! One of Oliver + S’s very first patterns, he popular Swingset Skirt, is now available all the way up to size 14! You can sew this twirly skirt for your 6 month old daughter, who is just starting to crawl, and sew it again when she’s 14 years old and almost as tall as you! And lucky you, today Oliver + S is announcing a Swingset Skirt sew-along (which will take placeNov 9-13). One lucky sew-along winner will win a $100 gift certificate to the Oliver + S website. You could win our giveaway and then win theirs–so much Oliver + S goodness!

Liesl has a lovely post about the Swingset Skirt: how it’s constructed and why she’s re-releasing it now. It is definitely worth a read. She also has a whole pinterest board devoted to ideas for the Swingset Skirt.

1. pockets full of cats  2. shark pockets  3. fox play dress 4. valentine skirt

This is such a great, basic pattern that you really could take it anywhere. I wanted to explore how you could use this pattern with the theme DISGUISE. Pockets are a quick and easy way to change up a basic pattern. Disguising the pockets as shark jaws or fox claws turns a simple skirt into a statement piece!

1. trompe d’oeil outfit  2. trompe d’oeil dress 3. trompe d’oeil skirt 4. cloud fabric  5. old brick wall fabric 6. clovers and grass fabric

Or you could disguise the skirt as a different skirt with trompe l’oeil details. Make freezer paper stencils to paint pockets, pleats, even a fanny pack on the fabric before you sew up the skirt. This is practical for the younger set–what 1 year old uses pockets?!–and my older tween-age daughter finds details like this irresistibly clever and cute.

For a simpler take on trompe l’oeil, use realistic photographic prints. I am in love with the idea of a brick wall Swingset Skirt!  You could even “spray paint” some graffiti on it (sorry, now I’m getting complicated again).  Grass, clouds, popcorn, rocket launch–these are all fabulous fabrics to use or you could turn a favorite photo into fabric on Spoonflower.

1. R2D2 skirt 2. wonder woman skirt 3. spiderweb poncho

We can’t talk about disguises without talking about Halloween. Even if your daughter doesn’t want to be a twirly princess this year, the Swingset Skirt still will work well for all kinds of costumes. Sew on a few blue squares and you’ve got an awesome R2D2 skirt that your daughter can (and will!) wear all year.  Or your kid could dress up as a spiderweb with a skirt disguised as a top (hat tip to Kristin, the original skirt as top).

1. cupcake costume 2. ice cream costume 3. gold cupcake skirt 4. accordion pleated gold fabric 5. pre-quilted boat fabric 6. vertical pleated chiffon

Making the Swingset Skirt with different fabric can change the look completely. The skirt is gathered, but if you use a pleated fabric in silver or gold you have 1/2 a cupcake costume! Or you could use a pre-quilted fabric that looks very much like a waffle cone and voile! you have 1/2 an ice cream cone costume. The best part of all of these ideas is that you won’t end up with a throw away Halloween costume, but a well made, gorgeous skirt that will last.

summer

oliver + s and a giveaway

Welcome to giveaway week! This week is full of so many wonderful things! I’m excited to introduced you to new shops and visit old favorites as well. Plus everyday there will be fantastic prizes to win!

Let’s start with everyone’s favorite, Oliver + S:

Oliver + S designs contemporary paper and PDF sewing patterns for children’s clothing and sells patterns by today’s best independent designers.

But Oliver + S doesn’t just design any old pattern.  They make well fitted, classically designed clothes and write the easiest to follow, most well written directions out there. They have been the gold standard for children’s wear patterns since they started. Even as the pool of independent designers has exploded in the last few years, Oliver + S continues to produce first-rate patterns.

Their new patterns are no exception. There are three new patterns in the spring-summer 2014 line: the Hide-And-Seek Dress, the Lullaby Layette, and the Garden Party Dress.  Whenever there is a new release by Oliver + S, the internet explodes with excitement and beautiful garments start popping up left and right. I’ve picked some of my favorites that were made with the s/s 14 patterns.

1. hide and seek tunic by Jess 2. houndstooth hide and seek dress by Rachael  3. hide and seek dress by Delia 4. hide and seek tunic by Erin

As with many of Oliver + S patterns, the hide and seek dress is quite simple. It is a relaxed-fit dress (or tunic!) with a front yoke and welt pockets. But as you can see from the photos above it can go from a breezy summer top to a strikingly bold dress. You can play up the yoke with color blocking or stripes–you can even have fun with the back–or just let the pretty shape of the dress be the defining feature.

1. baby’s first Oliver + S by Nichole 2. lullaby baby jacket by Cherie 3. tiny many jacket by Kristin  4. lullaby layette by Patricia

It’s surprising that there aren’t that many layette patterns out there and perhaps after the Oliver + S lullaby layette pattern there doesn’t need to be;)  This pattern includes a shirt and bodysuit (both short or long sleeved), pants, and a jacket. The pieces can be made out of knit or lightweight wovens. And as you can see from above they can be very sophisticated or super playful. Either way these are much more beautiful than any you can buy at the store.

1. birthday dress by Gail 2. garden party blouse by Vanessa 3. garden party dress by Jess 4. meadow garden party dress by Kristin

The last of the spring/summer line is the Garden Party dress. This is twirly girl’s dream! Flow-y, flower-y and comfy too! I know many little girls who would live in this dress. But then again, it doesn’t have to be sewn up in florals. Vanessa chose to make the tunic length in a bold black and white heart print. I absolutely love how it turned out!

 1. grainline studio 2. sew loft 3. victory 4. waffle 5. named

Oliver + S sells all of their patterns in printed or in PDF form on their site. But did you know that they also sell a selection of  beautiful patterns from independent designers. Some you might have heard of, some you might not have, but all of them make patterns for gorgeous clothes.

1. beach bum shorts by Kristin 2. sunny day shorts by Terri 3. customized sunny day shorts by Nina 4. bear butt baby shorts by Tara

And just because they are awesome, Oliver + S has a bunch of patterns for free on their site! The newest is the Sunny Day Shorts pattern. It is a simple, elastic waisted pair of shorts that screams out to be customized: pockets, piping, buttons, and why not sew a big cute bear on the butt?!

And now for the giveaway! Liesl has generously offered 3 Oliver + S digital patterns to the winner. If you win, you can chose whichever patterns you like best! Use the Rafflecopter widget below to enter by Monday July 21. This giveaway is open to international entries, void where prohibited by law.
