KCW: scavenger hunt!
fall

scavenger hunt: made by rae

Welcome to the last scavenger hunt of giveaway week! Or should that be the last giveaway of scavenger hunt week? Either way there is a fantastic prize to win from a fantastic shop–Made by Rae. Some of my most well-worn patterns are Made by Rae. When you find a pattern that works–for you to sew, for your kids to wear–you go back to it again and again. Made by Rae patterns just work, all the time! They are simple, easily customizable, and fit well. What more do you need?

Keeping with this season’s theme, DISGUISE, I picked 4 of Rae’s patterns and looked around to see what costumes people made with them. And wowwy wow wow! There are so many costumes out there made with Made by Rae patterns! Who knew a tunic could turn you into a swordsman or a simple pants pattern could magically transform you into prince charming? There are lots of disguises hiding in these staple patterns.

1. cowardly lion 2. lion cub 3. strong man 4. skeleton suit 5. scary tiger 6. pippi longstocking 7. spiderman 8. nurse costume

All the disguises pictured above started with the Flashback Skinny Tee pattern. The sewers used fleece, jersey, dad’s old tee shirts; they painted and stenciled; they played with colors and pattern. And look! It’s like a virtual Halloween parade right here on KCW! Give me two patterns, Rae’s flashback tee and Liesl’s cozy winter hat, and I will give you an awesome costume!

1. marty mcfly 2. little cowboy 3. fireman’s pants 4. darth vader 5. minions run wild 6. prince charming

I guess that would be a costume without pants! Luckily Rae’s got us covered in the pants department too. Elastic pants are a staple in my household and even more so when it come to dress up. There is no time to fuss with zippers and snaps when you have to be the Dark Lord RIGHT NOW! So if your kids are lacking in the pants department, whip up a few Parsley Pants and they will be happy little campers –or cowboys or firemen or time travelers, even.

Sometimes you just need to make one thing and be done. The Geranium Dress is the one pattern you need for all your girl’s princess and fairy and Studio Ghibli dreams to come true.

1.and 2. willow costume 3. mini mouse 4. and 5. fantastic mr. fox 6. inigo montoya

Of all the Made by Rae patterns-turned-into-costumes, Inigo Montoya (in the bottom right corner) has to be my very favorite. I crack up every time I see Jessica’s little girl dressed up as the intrepid sword fighter in The Princess Bride. She really looks like she’s about to say, “My name is Inigo Montoya, you killed my father, prepare to die!” Of course the Charlie Tunic works for less sinister characters as well. Just look at that sweet Mini Mouse!

All of these patterns (and more!) can be yours! Play along with our little scavenger hunt and you will be entered to win any 5 patterns you choose from Made by Rae’s shop.

scavenger hunt: imagine gnats

Have you been enjoying scavenger hunt week? There are only two more hunts to go on, then it’ll be time to stop playing games and get down to serious KCW business:) Today’s featured shop is a fan favorite, Imagine Gnats. Rachael not only runs this successful online fabric store, but also has a popular blog, and makes patterns in her “spare time” (whenever that is!).

1. cute logo! 2. french terry stripes 3. french terry eggplant 4. camouflage jersey knit

There is a lot of great fabric to be found in Rachael’s shop. She recently got a big shipment of french terry, which if you haven’t worked with before you are in for a real treat! French Terry is a knit fabric that is heavier than a t-shirt, but lighter than a sweatshirt. It has a good amount of stretch which makes it super comfy. The best thing about french terry is how soft it is!

Sometimes the things we sew for our kids are really for ourselves. Other times we want to make clothes that our kids will fall in love with. To do that it has to be soft and it has to be comfortable. There are some kids who are extra fussy about how things fit, sticky-y out-y tags, and scratchy seams. I have one of those (and was one of those!) so I know that Halloween can be an especially frustrating holiday. Feeling over-heated in itchy, plastic fabric is no fun. French Terry to the rescue, I say!

1. kid ewok 2. skeleton costume 3. totoro costume 4. shark hat

I picked out a few costumes that I think would work well–and be extra comfy–in french terry. I cannot get over the cuteness of that little ewok! And the costume looks like it would be pretty easy to put together too. Both the skeleton and Totoro costumes could do double duty as pjs. And the shark hat ticks off all the boxes: the DISGUISE theme, a little bit cute, and a little bit scary.

1. penguin hooded vest pattern by Hello Dear Kids 2. french terry cheetah 3. french terry zebra 4. french terry in burnt orange

The best pattern I found to show off Imagine Gnat’s lovely collection of french terry is this penguin hooded vest by Hello Dear Kids. It looks fun to sew and even more fun to wear! Just by changing up the features on the hood, and using some of the fabric I featured above, you could have a cheetah or zebra or cute little puppy vest. The vest will work for Halloween, everyday dress up play, and as a cozy vest on chilly fall days. You could hardly ask for more!

Now that I have sold you on french terry, you can fill up your basket with yards of it for all your comfy, cozy sewing needs. While you are shopping you might as well check out Rachael’s sumptuous supply of flannel. Would you just look at those colors?! And you might as well just look all over the shop–it’s all gorgeous. One can never have too much fabric right? Not only has Rachael offered a $50 gift certificate to one lucky scavenger hunt winner, she also has some super great coupons for all KCWers.

Use the code “kcw10” for 10% off orders over $50 and “kcw20” for 20% off orders over $100. Code not valid on sale items, gift certificates, or wholesale orders. valid until 11:59pm est 10/18/15.  And now for the scavenger hunt

scavenger hunt: chateau sew & sew

I am very excited to introduce you to a lovely fabric shop called Chateau Sew & Sew. Why the fancy French name? Chateau Sew & Sew is located in historic New Orleans. They have a gorgeous storefront in the Lower Garden District in a building that dates back to the 1800s. And they sell heaps of gorgeous fabric!

I hope you are enjoying the scavenger hunts! Today’s hunt will take you on a tour of Chateau Sew & Sew’s online shop–and a few other place they hang out on the internet too.

 1. tiger stripes 2. harajuku 3. cat mask 4. rabbit mask 5. ghost bunnies 6.bunnies

To show off some of the fabric Chateau Sew & Sew sells, I’ve paired prints with a few fantastic masks. When I think of this season’s theme, DISGUISE, the first thing I think of is masks. All you need to transform yourself into a cat (or bat or bunny or even a rainbow) is a mask! As long as you are looking out the eyes of a fluffy bunny, there is no need for an entire fluffy bunny suit. Why not make some fantastic pjs out of the Cotton + Steel ghost bunny print? Or for your kitty-obssessed kid, add some details in a striking cat print: a pocket or two, maybe a collar. A little bit of a good print goes a long way!

1. printable rainbow mask 2. rainbow 3. umbrellas (laminated) 4. rain

I could not resist this little boy in a rainbow mask. How excited is he?! Years ago my daughter dressed up as a rainbow for Halloween (back when her favorite color was rainbow!). You don’t have to go that far, but all of these prints would be great for the rainbow-obessesed. And how fantastic would a raincoat be lined in one of these prints. Or better yet, make the raincoat with the umbrella print on the outside–the umbrella fabric is laminated!– and rainbows on the inside. All day long they will feel like a bright rainbow, whether they are wearing that goofy mask or not:)

Have a look around the Chateau Sew & Sew shop and see what fabrics you can find. Will you hide a little fabric detail or go all out with a rainbow outfit?!

1. shark 2. alligator 3. unicorn

Chateau Sew & Sew sells more than fabric. They have a lovely gifts section too. Hooded bath towels are every kid’s favorite. They work for summer at the pool and all the time after their bath–and for dress up time too! I had never seen a unicorn one. Maybe it’s time I get one for myself:)
